Job Description:
Position: Heavy Equipment Operator           
Reports To: Crew Foreman
Schedule: Typically, Mon - Fri 7:00a - 6:00p. Varies based on project. Some weekend and night work required.

POSITION SUMMARY
Operate various heavy equipment, lay out for various excavations, backfills, road grading, assembly and installation of large drain pipe including: Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP), Reinforced Concrete Box (RCB), and Corrugated Metal Pipe (CMP) on company projects.
  • Safety and efficiently operate various required machinery including but not limited to excavator, front end loader, motor grader, skid steer, roller compactor, etc.
  • Studies project specifications with project superintendent to plan procedures for pipe installation sequencing.
  • Coordinates activities with supervisors daily.
  • Operates assigned heavy equipment to stock pile, excavate, backfill, grade, clear and grub, install and backfill pipe and culverts, etc.
  • Inspects work site to determine sequencing and method of pipe installation and survey for potential hazards or safety concerns.
  • Comply with company policies.  Comply with Federal, State and Company environmental policies and regulations.
  • Establish safe work environment that complies with OSHA standards and company safety program.
  • Observes assigned equipment to detect machinery malfunctions. Operates machinery to verify repair.
  • Inspects work to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications and the adherence to construction schedules.
  • Uses instruments such as lasers, grade rods, eye levels and transit levels to set appropriate grade for pipe installation.
  • Travel to and from job site.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of two years operating heavy equipment on highway / civil projects.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ABILITIES
Position requires employee to frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, handle objects, reach outward, and reach above head and shoulders, climb, descend, squat, kneel, bend, and occasionally lift carry/push/pull/move/drag on flat ground or steep slopes up to 75 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is outdoors. Working conditions range from frigid to hot temps, high winds, flying dust, slipping hazards and conditions and frequently exposed to loud noise from heavy equipment and machinery.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 
  • Some knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in heavy/highway construction work.
  • Some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to repeatedly lift and carry heavy objects (75+ pounds), walk and stand for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE 
  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.
  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.
  • Candidate must have current required licensing in good standing with the State of Colorado.
BENEFITS AND PAY
  • COMPETITIVE PAY-based on qualifications and experience. $26-$38/HOUR

REQUIREMENTS
